According to the Moscow Department of Information Technology (DIT), every fifth job ad posted in Moscow this past summer was IT related. Today we’ll examine the demand for developers, analysts, testers and other programmers, along with the salary range.
How Has the IT Market Changed Due to the Pandemic?
The global situation caused by COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the economy. According to results of the May poll conducted by the Center for Strategic Development, 15% of companies surveyed reduced salaries and cut working hours of IT specialists in marketing, finance and accounting.
According to zarplata.ru, in the first quarter of 2020 about a quarter of companies stopped hiring, and companies that continued to search for personnel posted 30% fewer vacancies than before the pandemic. The total number of job ads in the market dropped by 46%.
The digital technologies field has also been affected. In the first quarter of 2020, IT vacancies fell by 15% (according to zarplata.ru). Companies began to actively search online. Employees had to swiftly switch to a remote work format, which required a quick setup of virtual workstations and communications. But some employers were hesitant to hire online, because it made it difficult for new employees to adapt.
Alexey Anisimov, Team Lead at GlobalCareer, explains: “The IT sector was concerned with remote recruitment and onboarding, improving the efficiency of online communications, monitoring the work of remote teams and many little things related to the fact that the market wasn’t ready for the new format. For some companies, optimizing project portfolios became a relevant topic. For example, integrators working in the tourism industry urgently had to look for opportunities to diversify into other industries. However, demand for IT services remained consistently high among large-scale businesses, which were less affected by the pandemic, such as banks and government organizations. Therefore, the rate of hiring developers, analysts, testers and other experts increased.”
For a number of companies, managing remote workers was not easy and required the consolidation of resources, and sometimes even a search for new employees who could advise on best practices.
Changes in demand also led to structural changes in the IT market. There are fewer requests for the development of new systems, but at the same time the need for modernization and scaling of existing projects has increased. Also, due to the new situation, more companies were looking for support to ensure their remote employees were able to continue working without disruption.
According to an online survey of Muscovites aged 22 to 58, conducted at the start of last summer by RPG, 73% of respondents indicated that they had fully or partially switched to a remote work format before the pandemic.
Which IT Jobs Are in Demand Today?
According to headhunter.ru, in August 2020, analysts (17% of vacancies), testing specialists (14% of vacancies) and Java developers (11% of vacancies) were most in demand.
If you look at the data for previous periods, you can see that demand hasn’t changed. Nevertheless, generally over spring-summer, demand for core and large-scale enterprise development has increased thanks to the launch of several large projects in Russia. There is a growing demand for Java developers, testers (mainly test automation engineers) and systems analysts. The decline in hiring rates in small companies and digital studios does not significantly affect the overall picture.
Companies in Need of IT Specialists
According to headhunter.ru, in August 2020, there were 7,252 IT vacancies. Sberbank, VTB, MTS, Rostelecom and Mail.ru Group are among the largest companies actively hiring.
About a year ago, developers, analysts, testers and other programmers were most in demand at Sberbank. In addition, at the end of summer 2020, the total number of IT positions in Russia grew by 53% compared to the same period last year.
What Are the Salary Rates in the Digital Technology Market
According to Habr Career, the median salary in the IT industry at the end of the first half of 2020 was 108,000 rubles; in Moscow – 150,000 rubles, in St. Petersburg – 120,000 rubles, in other regions – 80,000 rubles.
Alexey Anisimov, Team Lead at GlobalCareer, comments: “According to our analysts, these figures may be somewhat underestimated, especially if we take into account the extremely high salaries of senior specialists, whose salary rates are not publicly available; these rates are not indicated in job descriptions, and candidates prefer to discuss them personally with employers. In addition, when analyzing the market, freelancers and employees of foreign organizations that do not have offices in Russia are often not taken into account. Usually their salaries are much higher than the average, and sometimes even exceed the highest thresholds.”
Salary arbitrations in specific profiles for the industry in Russia look different. However, we see a general tendency of increasing competition for experienced specialists. Considering our experience of working with large fintechs, it should be noted that the highest salary offers for senior Java developers have risen from 290,000 to 470,000 rubles per month before taxes. Senior QAs, who represent an extremely small part of the market, can count on salaries of up to 450,000 rubles per month. We provide detailed salary analytics to clients upon request.
In general, the IT sector weathered the pandemic storm the best. According to Naumen, more than 90% of IT industry employees were already working remotely before the pandemic, so all the processes and technologies were set up long ago. And for IT outsourcing companies, requests to deploy infrastructure for a remote work format have become an additional source of income. This speaks of the business demand for a qualitative analysis of the situation, for choosing the right vector of development and the most effective adaptation in the current conditions.
